A common species in mesic grasslands across almost whole Europe,
commonly also cultivated in different varieties and present as a
ruderal. Avoid the frequent confusion with its close relative
Viola suavis M. Bieb. which has a similar ecology and only
subterraneous stolons, differently colored not odorant flowers
(white spots at the basal parts of the petals larger and clearly
delimited; the veins on the petals not darker colored than the
petal).
